The point is…since when has it been an afront to our civil rights to be asked to “show our papers” and to be arrested for failing to do so?

As we have learned since this post was written, this will never fly because the state is issuing the card. That means state enforcement.

Not to mention everyone who is here legally is already issued paperwork they are required to show when asked. How is another card going to change the problem? — much of which is non-enforcement of existing law by local, state, and federal levels.

Not that I’m against such extreme measures — which I am not — but no politician would ever spend the political capital to support them. The public outrage against such extremities would be deafening. And, according to the courts, can only be enforced at the federal level.
